Software for analysing cloud of 3D points

I am looking for some software or tool, which could be used to analyze clouth of 3D points. Assume I collect 3D points by using some laser or 3D scanner. Then I need to find what is a volume of an object (3D), which is represented by these cloud of 3D points. I need also to find the smallest qube in, which the object can be put. At the memoent it is good enough for me to get some instruction which existing software could be used for this job. I ofcours woul dlike to select one which will look for me as really expert for such job. I hear that Mathlab could be used for it but I am not sure if this is the best (optimal) tool for it
