This falls very neatly into my skillset. I'd build it in 3 layers, really. The objects itself in a standalone grayscale layer on the bottom, a 'background' layer cutout on top and then a material layer in the middle. This would allow you to exchange the material layer with simple javascript or PHP fetch and simulate all sorts of materials.
