The book title is, Enigmatic Texts in the Gospel and the Constitution The subtitle is An enigmatic text "does not mention what it knows; it hides what organizes it; it unveils solely by its form what it erases from its content. Summary: Part 1 - Gospel There are in the Gospel of Mark three enigmatic texts. So far, nobody was able to explain the function that they fulfill in Mark’s narrative. Two of those enigmatic texts are connected to the two miraculous feedings of five and four thousand people (see Mark 6:52 and 8:14-21). One is linked to the use of parables in Jesus’ teaching (see Mark 4:10-12). In this context, the followers of Jesus are divided into two categories, those who are inside (the twelve and a few others) and those who are outside (the large crowds that enjoyed listening to Jesus). But why are the large crowds rejected as unreliable outsiders? There are memories that are repressed in the Gospel of Mark, not in the Gospel of John. They are all related to the miraculous feeding of the five thousand. The first text says that the people recognized in Jesus the Messiah and wanted to proclaim him king (see John 6:14-15). But he rejected the idea. The second text says that Jesus lost his popularity and that the large crowds abandoned him (see John 6:66). The third text says that Jesus asked the twelve whether they wanted to leave him as well (see John 6:67). My study shows that the two collective meals were not improvised miracles, but organized rituals. Jesus organized them with the help of his disciples. He sent them all over Galilee to invite the people to a big rally. He had something new to introduce. When he arrived with his disciples, five thousand people were waiting for him. They had come with plenty of food for the entire day. According to Freud, repressed memories return in disguised forms and reveal what was repressed. Our three enigmatic texts fall in this category. They allow me to reconstruct what is likely to have happened. Part 2 - Constitution The Ninth and Tenth Amendments are enigmatic texts. They speak of rights that are reserved for the states and the people, but they do not identify those rights. My gospel study showed me how to interpret enigmatic texts. They hide what they mean. When the Constitution was written and submitted to the approval of the states, a big debate erupted between the Federalists who were in favor of approval, and the Anti-Federalists who rejected the Constitution. The Ninth and Tenth Amendments favor the position of the Anti-Federalists. But they don’t say so overtly. In other words, they are against a powerful federal government and for greater autonomy for our states and local governments. The change that was introduced by the recent decision of the Supreme Court concerning abortion goes in this direction, but it stops short of recognizing a similar autonomy for our cities and towns. America is deeply divided on many important issues. It makes no sense to try and overcome those divisions.
