QUESTION 1
1. Find an example of a text in your source language in which the author
has used a substantial amount of figurative language. The figurative
language could include metonymy, synecdoche, euphemism, hyperbole, fixed
expressions, metaphors, similes and idioms (you don't have to discuss all
of these). Your text should be around 100-150 words in length.
2. Provide a meaning-based translation of your text in your target
language.
- If your source text is in a LOTE also provide a literal translation in
English.
- If your source text is in English provide a literal
back-translation of your translation.
3. Write a commentary about your translation of around 650-850 words.
Your commentary should include:
- A brief description of the source text including such things as the
origin (where you found the text), the mode (is it an email, a poem, a
report, etc.?), topic,
- Some examples of the figurative elements of the source text and a
brief discussion relating to each example which could include answers to
the following:
- What type of figurative expression is it (metonymy, synecdoche,
euphemism, etc.)?
- Why do you think the author used this figurative expression?
- How did you recognise that this was a figurative expression?
- What is the meaning of the figurative expression?
- What difficulties did you face in understanding and translating
this expression?
- How did you translate the figurative expression and what
strategies did you use?
- How successful do you think your translation of this figurative
expression is and was there any loss of meaning?
- A discussion of the texts as a whole including:
- What does the figurative language add to the source text as a
whole?
- Do you think your translation has these same qualities?
QUESTION 2
1. Find an example of a text in your source language which contains
some skewing between the deep and surface structures. The skewing could
include skewing between the grammatical and semantic classes; skewing
between the chronological order of events and the word order; skewing of
the grammatical elements and the case roles or skewing of
grammatical form
and illocutionary force (week 8). Your text should be around
100-150 words
in length.
2. Provide a meaning-based translation of your text in your target

back-translation of your translation.

skewing which wasnt in the source text?
- How successful do you think your translation of this part of
text is and was there any loss of meaning?
- A discussion of the texts as a whole including:
- What does the figurative language add to the source text as a
whole?
- Do you think your translation has these same qualities?
