Create Categories

I am working on a personal project whereby I would like to create a list that covers? "everything" that exists in the world.? More specifically, I want to create a hierarchical list of categories.

For example, [url removed, login to view] has a hierarchical list of categories of things that they sell -- you can traverse the categories on the BestBuy website and eventually find a category that describes what you want to buy.? Almost every website that sells items has a hierarchical list like this.

I want to create something similar which includes:

1) things -- material things that you could buy or invent.

2)? ideas -- for example, political viewpoints

3) places & services -- for example, "vacation spots" would be a "place".? For example, "Locksmith" would be a service.? The Yellow Pages in the US is a good source of these categories.

I have already created a list of over 600 categories in the span of 1 day.? I am looking for someone to help me finish this.? The ideal candidate does not need to do the entire thing himself/herself -- I can do part of it, too, but obviously I would not be willing to pay as much for someone who only completes part of the list.

## Deliverables

**Detailed Description of? What I am Looking For:**

I have attached an example of the format in which I would like to see the final results.? Open the example file.? There are three columns:

1) ID: this is a unique positive integer less than 1 billion.? Every row has a unique id.? You can assign this anything you wish so long as each row has a unique number.? ? The id numbers do not need to be sequential (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

2) Category: This is the category name.? Keep it as short as possible (no more than 20 characters if at all possible).? Do not copy & paste all this information from another website, book, or other literature; you may use them? as references only.? You can use any alphabetical character in the English language (upper and/or lowercase letters in the 26-letter alphabet), numbers (0 through 9), spaces, ampersands, single quotes, and hyphens.? Other characters may work also but try to avoid characters not written in the previous sentence whenever possible.? Do not use the backslash "\" at all.

You can use the same category name more than once if they have different parent_ids.? ? For example, you can create a category called "1980s" under the category "Clothing" and also under the category "Houses" and also under the category "Cars".? The category "1980s" would be used 3 times, but each time would be in reference to something different (e.g. 1980s Clothing, 1980s Houses, 1980s Cars).

The three and only three high-level categories should be (1) Things, (2) Ideas, and (3) Places & Services.? Everything you write should fall into one of these three categories.? If it does not fit, then it does not need to be included.? For example, the generic? category "People" is neither a thing nor an idea nor a place/service so you need no include it.? However, a "Locksmith" is a service so should be included.? But you wouldn't need to list out specific people, like "John Smith".

The Category names should be? MECE (mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive).? Look this term up? if you are unsure what this means.? See below for criteria by which I will judge your final result.

3) Parent_ID: This is the ID number of the parent category.? For example, "Books" has the ID of "9".? Its immediate sub-category "Fiction" has a Parent_ID of "9".? Except for the first row ("Books" in this example spreadsheet), every single row should have exactly one? Parent_ID.? You cannot have more than one Parent_ID, and you cannot have 0; it must be exactly? one.

**If I Accept Your Bid:

**

1)? I will provide you with what I have thus far for you to complete the list.

2) I will work with you to ensure that you understand the instructions.? I recommend that you spend about 2 hours working on it and then send me what you have before continuing.? This way, I can review your work and then let you know if you are on the right track.? I will provide as much feedback as you require to get the job done.? Although I think this task can be done in one day, if it takes you more than one day, that is fine as long as you provide me with the updated list at least once per day at the end of your working day.? This will allow me to catch errors earlier rather than later.? If you do not do it properly and wait to show me after you have "finished", I will ask you to start over.

**How I will Judge Your Work:

**I only need a list which comprises the 3 columns as described above.? You don't need to produce the hierarchical list in the Textarea in the Excel spreadsheet; this was meant for illustrative purposes to show you how the hierarchical tree I will create is? built from the 3 columns that you write.

If you do as I suggest above (i.e. send me your work for review prior to finishing), I think you and I will have a very good understanding of what is acceptable and what is not.? However, I will list out the details here for legal purposes so that we can clearly define a minimum baseline in the very unlikely case of dispute.

1) In general, Categories? should be at least 6 levels deep.? For example, "Things -> Technology" would be two levels ("Things" would be Level 1; "Technology" would be Level 2.).? "Things -> Technology -> Computers" would be three levels deep.? ? "Things -> Technology -> Computers -> Laptops" would be four levels deep.? Etc.? Not every category needs to be at least 6 levels deep.? Some should be more than 6; some should be less than 6.

If you go above and beyond (i.e. consistently more than? 10 levels deep), I will likely give you? a bonus.

2) I already have created about 600 categories -- by the time you begin, there may be even more.? I expect you to come up with at least 2000 additional categories (i.e. the 2000 does not include the categories that I created).

If you go above and beyond (i.e. more than 3500 additional categories), I will likely give you a bonus.? If you go much more than that, I will likely give you a bigger bonus -- but check with me before spending too much time doing this.
