Post-stroke rehabilitation of an African woman

University Missouri-Columbia. School of Health Professions: Virtual Health Care Team.
Describes a single case of community-based post stroke rehabilitation of a woman living in poverty. Highlights the woman's lack of access to health services and transport to attend institution-based rehabilitations services. Describes adaptations used by community-based rehabilitation therapists to overcome lack of equipment.

Individuals with traumatic brain injuries returning to work in South Africa.

Work 41: 1-14
Identified the central concepts that hampered and facilitated the return to work process of individuals with brain injury. Results revealed that participants experienced a sense of loss of function, a fear of the future and loss of confidence in their worker roles. Participants reported that means of adapting occupational routines and active engagement in rehabilitation developed confidence in future worker roles

Successful students’ negotiation of township schooling in contemporary South Africa.

Drawing on data from a large longitudinal qualitative case study using post-structuralist theory on learning and identity, we describe participants’ perspectives on negotiated their high school contexts. We analyse their subject positions, how they negotiated through social networks and used resources. We argue that a focus on how successful students negotiate their environments challenges the pathologising paradigm of “disadvantage” that characterises research and debates in higher education.

Health sciences undergraduate education at UCT: A story of transformation

Since the first democratic elections in 1994 changes in the country and in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has made significant progress in achieving equity of access for students. Remaining challenges include recruiting students from rural areas and achieving gender equality in the allied and rehabilitation professions. The FHS has developed innovative approaches to addressing the diversity of educational preparedness to maintain exit-level clinical competency standards.

Describes the experiences of Dutch university students during an intercultural exchange placement in an impoverished community in rural South Africa. Students, working alongside South African counterparts, provided health science intervention in a variety of professional disciplines. From interview data, students perceptions and experiences of cultural differences are described.

Exploration of higher education assessment practices in a Faculty of Health Sciences. Quality assurance criteria for 'new' assessment methods were used to evaluate assessment practices in Departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work and Movement Science and strategies are proposed to develop assessment practices reflective of the emerging paradigm in education.

‘So I have to be positive, no matter how difficult it is’: a Longitudinal case study

Describes the development of identity and agency of a non-traditional student's learning journey drawing on longitudinal narrative data. Using Archer's theory on identity development we argue that the student participant demonstrates characteristics of Archer's 'autonomous reflective' identity in overcoming adversity.
