Decent understanding of Dyes/ Pigments / inks - products & market 2. Good interviewing skills to elicit reasonably correct info regarding production capability and their lead times for providing product samples / qc samples 3. Vendor Identification skills / Product sourcing skills While I'm a Materials Science Post Graduate qualified, I guess this would help in understanding the chemistry part, with ability to identify key suppliers ( have done multiple times most recent being in the recent startup that has ensured that the startup company is now reasonably established). Also during my Business Management stint have been involved in quiet a few product launches which has been done by meticulously understanding customers needs & wants by market research.
