Sensor Signal Translator

I am needing a sensor signal translator to allow multiple variations of a sensor to be used. Specifically, this involves modern automotive fuel tank level sensors. The Engine Control Unit (ECU), reads the signals from the fuel level gauge, is interpreted by the ECU, and the physical gauges are controlled as a separate task. The sensor is most commonly a rheostat. The variation can be the high and low resistance (example: 0 ohms empty and 90 oms full). The resistance range can also be inverted. The scope of this project is allow the use of aftermarket fuel tanks with sensors different from those originally equipped with the vehicle and still maintain full use of the factory gauge and it's accuracy. This would require the ability to read these different available sensors, communicate properly with the ECU, and calibrate the high and low fuel level of the gauge. An Arduino or similar controller was my first choice, along with a digital potentiometer or DAC to provide the ECU with an appropriate signal. I'm open to simpler solutions. Terminal block style connections are also acceptable. Having manual potentiometers for calibrating the high/low is fine. I envision the calibration process being: 1. Manually put sensor in it's "full" position 2. Adjust "full level" potentiometer until gauge reads proper full status 3. Manually put sensor in it's "empty" position 4. Adjust "empty level" potentiometer until gauge reads proper empty status. A switch of some sort to invert the input sweep range will be necessary to accommodate different sensor types.
