Instead of just patching the problem with a restart, it would be best to fix the mySQL issue that is causing the fault. I can do this easily.

Hey mate, My advise is to find out what's the bottleneck causing the crash in the first place. The logs from mysql and apache will be very helpful. Common dirty solutions will be just to generally stop/kill and restart related process when it gives error status as per your cron solution. But this is not preferable as it will eventually corrupt your db. Let me know if you need my help.
