Customize Wordpress Menu Background Color

My wordpress site has a menu. It has white letters and no background, which looks good on a dark page. But the photos that I am displaying on my page behind the menu are sometimes light in color, so the menu is difficult to see.
I need help tweaking the css to add a background to the menu and the submenus so that it is visible whether the photos is light or dark.

I attach a pdf with arrows confirming the menu I am talking about.
I attach the CSS file which I believe needs to be changed.
I can provide access to my test wordpress site if necessary.
