Build and ROV Control Center software package for BeagleBone

This project is for the design of a software package to be a control center for an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). If you don't know what one is, it would be advisable to research this first. The software will be installed on a BeagleBone, which is being modified in another Freelancer project. Because of this, you will need to work closely with myself and the other Freelancer in order to complete this project to my requirements.

There are some attachments to this project, which include samples of control centers from other ROV manufacturers, which I would like you to use as a sample for what it is that I am after.

Here are the essential things that the comand center need to have:

1. Firstly and foremost, it must have at its center, the display from the camera on the ROV

2. Vital elements need to be displayed graphically:

A) Depth (in meters and feet)

B) Heading (in degrees of a compass)

C) Internal and external temperature (in Celsius and Fahrenheit)

D) Light control (either on or off, or the brightness setting measured in percent)

E) Power output from each thruster (in percent)

F) Pitch and roll (information provided by the gyroscope within the ROV)

G) Mission runtime (in hours)

H) Mission date (in calendar date)

I) Mission location (either user inserted or via GPS)

J) Power supply at the ROV (in volts and amps)

Though this is all I have listed, upon working with the hardware engineer, I may need to add a few later, but I will advise ASAP. I would also like some input into this.

3. The user needs to be able to capture video from the camera and store it. The software needs to allow the user the ability to record and take still images and export them to the micro-sd card which the BeagleBone has as standard.

4. All the data that is collected from the elements above need to be recorded as a telemetry-style measure, for later reference. Therefore, the software needs to somehow be able to integrate a display measure to the user.

5. A sub-menu window needs to exist, opened through a button somewhere on the screen, to allow the user to view sonar data, IF a sonar is attached to the system

6. The main screen where the camera view is should have the option for the user to display data such as depth, heading, water temperature, mission date and time and other information as an overlay to the image. This NEEDS to be optional for the user

The more complex part of this software is the autopilot features. The user needs to be able to input some features, and the ROV needs to respond. In other words, if the user sets the depth and heading, the software needs to guide the ROV there. This shouldn't be too difficult as I've seen other systems available open source which do much the same thing.

This software will be installed on the BeagleBone, and I would like it to be a direct boot-to, meaning that the user will not need to launch the application when they start the system, rather that is what it goes to directly. Having said that, I would like an option where the user can input a user name and password and actually access the standard beaglebone system.

On a final note, this is a long term project. If all goes well, this ROV should go through various stages of life and I need a software engineer who has an outlook to the future and ways of improving their software through updates and patches. So please keep this in mind when considering my project.
