Hi, I'm new here hence my lack of reputation, however I have been working with Joomla since 2008. I'm therefore familiar with all versions since then and I'm fully qualified. Lately I have been working on a number of upgrade projects. I would recommend you upgrade to version 3.x instead of 2.5 to avoid having to run another upgrade later, unless there is a specific reason (plugins?) for choosing 2.5. In any case your template will have to be re-developed as 1.5 templates are not compatible with newer versions of Joomla. The look and feel can remain the same but under the hood it will be new code. As far as legacy modules/components/plugins go it would help if you had a list of them in order to find new versions or replacements altogether. In terms of process, what I like to do for upgrades, is clone the existing site, run my scripts and perform corrections on the clone, document all the tweaks, submit the upgraded cloned site to you for validation (there might be iterations if necessary) and when validated, perform the upgrade end to end on a new cloned instance, verify it and finally switch the domain to point to the last cloned upgraded version. If your content changes frequently that would require a freeze of the old site for a few hours most likely. During that time it would still be accessible but no updates would be allowed.
