Social Network Notifications Tweak - Easy PHP/MySQL Addition

I've a social network in which people can create a thread/conversation. Whenever someone replies the author is notified of the reply and in theory so is everyone else who's contributed to the thread.

However, the system was initially built to only notify the author of a reply, but not notify other contributors that there's been a reply. There was a fix implemented in the system to resolve this but it's very unstable and the notifications informing users who've contributed to the thread that there's been a new reply are poorly built. Sometimes they simply don’t come through, other times the display the wrong way around (eg. “User 1 has replied to User 2’s thread” when it should instead be “User 2 has replied to User 1’s thread”). Another problem is that for some reason notifications relating to a thread that you've replied to (but not authored) seem to vanish after you've received a certain number of them or after a certain time period. So now in my threads page it shows lots of threads that relate to replies to my threads but all the notifications about replies to other users' threads have disappeared.

I think the solution needs to be a new notification entry in the database for every user that's contributed prior to their reply (rather than the system just reading the notification intended for the author and then processing it for others who've replied). There might need to be another column added to the database in that case.

The programmer I hire needs to be efficient in resolving the problem and extremely knowledgeable in MySQL/PHP database structure and processing. The current notifications table also powers the user activity page (see here: [url removed, login to view]) so altering the database needs to still ensure that it fits in with this.
