Code compiling

here's the situation: we have acquired a system on module running android 5.1 from china. the source code that they are using runs well with their hardware and is proven to work as it is able to boot no problem. however, for our requirements, we are using it for a digital kiosk. so this means we would like to remove certains apps from the original android source code such as messenging, contact lists, home buttons, and so on. the problem is, i cannot seem to compile the given code and hence cannot change anything yet. do you think you could do this?
