I have a string of LEDs in a series. I am using a 700mA constant current driver to drive anywhere from 30 - 40 LEDs. The LEDs run at 3V each, so my forward voltage ends up being anywhere from 90 - 120VDC. I have a problem with a new project that is getting too hot. I can't reduce the number of LEDs so I will need to add a cooling fan. However, I don't want to run a second power supply to power the cooling fans. Most cooling fans run at 12VDC, and draw around 0.14amps. I can't put two fans in series with the circuit as the 700mA is 5X the current that the fans will use. I need the circuit to be energy efficient, I don't want to waste 7watts (700mA - 140mA * 12V) by putting a resistor in series with the cooling fans to turn the extra current into heat. Is there some way to add two cooling fans to my string of LEDs and provide the 140mA at 12V that the fans will need and yet keep maximum circuit efficiency? To win the project you will describe a solution to me. You don't have to give specific component part numbers but you should be specific. Once you win the project the job will be to add your circuit to my string of LEDs (I will provide a gerber file) for the two cooling fans.

Why not use the LEDs as your voltage divider and tap into them at xxx LEDs interval using the voltage drop to give you a potential difference to power your fan. if you are getting a 0.5v drop across an LED then the v drop across 24 LEDs will give you the 12 volts you need.

Hello. I am a veteran Embedded systems AND PCB designer. I have previously worked on PWM driven LED string for Backlight control, with a very power and thermal efficient design as this was supposed to be in a very tight enclosed space. Would love to help with your project. Please see PMB for details.

Um ,there is way if you don't want to add nearly nothing, across any 6 LEDs chain, take a parallel connection of the fan with a 5.1 Volt LED in series, do so to (say )the bottom section of another LED chain, The Drop of the LED current willbe mkimalminimal
