What shapes an individual and builds their character is how well an individual is able to cope, what they learn from that experience. I believe the strength of a person and their character is truly seen when you are able to observe first hand how that person is able to grow from an experience whether it is a blessing or a tragedy. The world in its entirety, every single living creature on this earth has undergone some form of tribulation or impediment. They have all had to fight for something, while every incident may not be equally as challenging. Nonetheless, put simply things happen and that’s life. I believe that it is the rise after you fall that truly counts because everyone is going to fall at some point or another that is inevitable. If everyone went through life being harsh, bitter, cold people because of bad experiences what would the world be like? Everyone would be unwilling to help one another. We live in an interdependent community; we need each other and depend on one another for survival. My parents instilled in me as a young child to always help if you can. I have always be eager to help anyone in any dilemma if I was capable.

I never knew he existed; he had the most beautiful light brown caramel skin, dark thick wavy hair, and gorgeous big brown eyes with prettier eye lashes than mine. He wore glasses right up to his nose with a strap around the back of his neck to secure them in place when he jumped up and screamed in excitement. This usually happened whenever an iphone was in his hand. His mannerisms were very particular; he never liked to wear socks or shoes and he had a tendency of walking on his tippy toes. His name is Caleb and he is five years old. He is my younger cousin who was recently diagnosed as being Autistic. Caleb was born prematurely, seventeen weeks early. He spent the first five and a half months of his NICU in the NICQ and the first year of his birth consistently in and out of the hospital. He came home on oxygen, unable to fully breathe on his own at that time. He had surgery for NEC that removed over half of his small intestines. He attends a private charter school, in addition to behavioral and speech therapy several times a week. I wondered so many things about Caleb when I first met him. What happened during his mother’s pregnancy that caused him to be born so prematurely? Would he ever be normal? What exactly is Autism and what causes someone to be born with this condition? Can Caleb out grow it and will he have a normal life?

Volunteer at Brandon Regional Hospital ( 2004- 2007) assisting in various departments of the hospital in the summer time, helpinf deliver hippo-grams to patients, helping in the kitchen and in the registration department.
