You are going to take a virtual tour of the town of Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island. As you watch the videos, listen for ways that the natural world of Estero Island is important to people as well as the planet and find the connections between the two.
Successfully completing this virtual field trip requires four steps: reading the Matanzas Pass Talking Points included in the assignment, watching the videos below, answering the associated questions, and submitting a Word document through the assignment in Canvas.

• The cottage that Mrs. Hughes is presenting in sits at the entrance to Matanzas Pass Preserve, a Lee County Conservation 2020 preserve.
Mrs. Hughes is a long-time resident of Estero Island and a member of the Estero Island Historic Society. She used to share her stories of growing up on the Island with hundreds of FGCU Colloquium students every semester. She also treated them to a snack of Ritz crackers, cream cheese, and her own hand-made sea grape jelly along with lemonade to wash it all down. We all miss her gentle soul and caring touch.

Go to Google Maps and find Sanibel Island, the Caloosahatchee, and Bowditch Point (on the north end of Estero Island/Fort Myers Beach). The flat she talks about where all the sea grasses died is just to the east of Bowditch Point. Do you agree with Mrs. Hughes’ assessment? Why or why not?
What was the difference that Mrs. Hughes saw between effects of the older hurricanes that struck the Island when the cottage sat on the beach front and Hurricane Charley in 2004? Is there a way to remedy this?
