Walter LaFeber, in the assigned reading about the Powell Doctrine, outlines what is known as the Weinberger Doctrine. What was the Weinberger Doctrine? And how did it relate to the Powell Doctrine? [login to view URL] late June 1950, U.S. President Truman regarded the North Korean invasion of South Korea in the context of what historians have labeled the "Munich analogy" (c.f., lecturepod 7.1). For example, Truman later said of the invasion: "Communism was acting in Korea just as Hitler, Mussolini and the Japanese had acted… If we let Korea down, the Soviets will keep right on going and swallow up one piece of Asia after another… the Near East would collapse and no telling what would happen in Europe" (c.f., Paterson, Clifford, Maddock, Kisatsky, and Hagan, American Foreign Relations, p. 268). Was Truman correct to draw on the Munich analogy? Or was he mistaken? What should have he done in response to the North Korean invasion?
