There are several plugins hat you can install that will help prevent this. I use First Defense Against Spam which does a very good job of preventing users from actually getting to the site. I also use Stop Spammer Registrations to prevent bot registrations. If you want to take an additional step there is DM Email to verify email accounts before letting the actual registration through.
