Build a Website (integrate already developed HTML with back-end DB)

At a glance, if I were building this from scratch, I would create a single page application using and MVC framework like backbone.js, with an API and authentication/authorization managed by Node.js. If you don't, one of the solutions you should consider, is building an API based on Java Servlet, and tie in the Front-End using Ajax calls to the API. This would be one of the most elegant approaches. The Back-End will be well organized, and easy to maintain. It also can be distributed on more servers in the future, with minimal code changes. As a hosting solution, you can use a basic Linux distribution, with Jetty server installed. What is the database system you use for the data?
