We can define a standard e-commerce checkout like the following (assuming that you are using paypal): 1. Add items to cart 2. Do checkout (in your website. Not actual paypal checkout) 3. collect customer information (login / signup + biling address) 4. save order to the database and collect new order_id. 5. send the order_id as part of the 'paypal express checkout request' 6. User will be redirected to your website from paypal. Update the order status in your database using the order_id returned from paypal.
