Arduino Real Time Clock

I am using a type of real time clock alongside an arduino UNO. I have found some old code but it's narrative and effectiveness leaves a lot to be desired. I need someone who is proficient in reading schematics for IC pinouts and the setting up of legacy IC's. The end goal is for two separate sketches that will enable me to program/initialise the two types of RTC. These being Texas instruments BQ3285p and BQ4845p. The main issue at the moment is initialising the oscillator as this appears to have been omitted in the original code and this needs to be written in as according to the PDF datasheets this needs to be done with new chips. The schematic with the code is poor to say the least, so some forensic deciphering of the pin outs and cross referenced with the code will be necessary. At a later stage for those with experience of using Eagle, I will require a design for a breakout board using either or both chips for starters. Where successful there are other RTCS which could be useful and this could entail similar diagnostic work/code writing. At the moment I have several of the chips and have got the 3285 working but the stumbling block is the initialising of the oscillator, I am sure this is a software i.e. code issue. SKILLS required, electronic engineering fault finding, conversant with arduino code, ideally exposure to using rtcs and microcontrollers desirable in a commercial setting and experience using legacy IC's.
