SAMPLE ARTICLE: FACTS DON'T MATTER
It does not help me to feel too good when I realize that the biggest and loudest celebration in the whole world is based on falsehood. With all due respect to the originators of the Christmas event and Christians in general, I have read enough historical material to realize that the story behind Christmas does not square up with the facts at all.
Any polite Christian on the street (which means anyone called John or Jane, and not necessarily a practicing Christian) will readily and confidently tell you that the day is marked in honour of the birth of Jesus Christ. While I really believe in a historical Jesus and even truly believe in all His claims to be the son of God etc, I know for a fact that the 25th of December used to be a day of celebration in ancient Rome for the honour of a certain pagan deity. The foregoing assertion may not impress a qualified historian, but, whatever it was, the fact is that the 25th of December as a day of celebrations preceded Christianity, which means to me, that it originally had nothing to do with the birth of Jesus Christ.
As at today, I have been able to get evidence that the participants in the annual celebration of the event that can rightly be referred to as the most popular in the world are not necessarily ignorant of the facts, more or less as stated above. The mood of the season gets just too powerful to be resisted or to allow for preoccupation with historical accuracy: they just don't care anymore. Unlike these "happy fellows" however, I find myself wondering what to think about people in general each time I remind myself that facts may not matter in the real world like my science teacher had made me believe. In the final analysis, it would appear that the truth is whatever enough people believe to be so.
What a shame!
