Custom Drupal UI with Ajax on existing drupal site

We need to make some additions to a site we've already built. The existing site pulls map images off the server and displays them dynamically based on a user's choice. We are tryign to add a page that pulls up four images at a time off the server, and does some additional functionality with those images. The site is a weather map site, and deals with constantly rebuilt images.

The drupal site itself does no image manipulation, but just displays the images when they are made by a seperate program on the server. Below please find an explanation on exactly what we want this custom page to do:

A link on the main page allows "pro" level users to go to the custom page.

On that page, we separate the page into maybe 5 or 6 blocks.

Block 1, we can call the GFS block. It will basically be a block specifically with GFS choices, with borders. The title could be "GFS 4 Panel Plots".

In that block, we need to have menu choices for each of the 4 images that will be pulled. Menu 1 would have "Run Time", and "Variable". Menus 2 through 4 will have the same thing.

Once all of these are selected, hitting "Enter" or whatever, should call up a new page with those 4 images.

On this 4 panel image page, there should be a few sets of mouseovers. On the top of each map, you would have the Domain, so people can mouseover to a different domain if they want.

Right under that, Run Time. Under the image, 2 other sets of mouseovers, 1 will have a short abbreviation of variable choices, the other should dynamically build and show the hours that have already come out.

Variable Choices would include things like 500mb, 850mb T, 2mT, and others to be determined. The hours will dynamically build, so if the GFS is out to hour 18, the hours that should show up are 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18. There will be quite a few of these, so it might take a few rows. If it takes too many rows, we can show fewer maps, like 0,6,12,18, etc.

Also, clicking the image should enlarge it using the lightbox software, or right clicking into a new tab.

We should also have an Auto Refresh option so that when it is checked, the latest images will appear.

Blocks 2-4 will be the same thing, but with different models. The other models will be GFS Ensembles, ECMWF, and ECMWF Ensembles. I am not sure if one more might be needed at this time.

Under all of those individual model boxes, we would like the option to mix and match models, maybe calling it Model Combo or something.

In this case, it will be the same as above, with 4 images, but there would be an extra menu box to pick the model for each block. The other 2 would Run Time and Variable. Once selected, the page that is generated should have the same build as blocks 1-4.
