Build a global traffic director AND global CDN

I am trying to build a prototype [1] gloabl traffic director and [2] global CDN I have a bunch of servers across multiple countries/locations and will like to setup a way where users that try to access web applications hosted on those servers will be "smartly" routed to the closest server AND also setup a global CDN network where i can operate my own "private" CDN This project will not be exactly a PRODUCTION setup, but a prototype than can be easily deployed with same setup to use in a PRODUCTION environment, so there is room to experiment with different technologies and deciding on the best one that solves the problem the in the most efficient way. Technologies that will be used include Linux(Ubuntu/Debian/CentOS), Nginx, Apache, Varnish Cache, HAProxy, Bind, Maxmind GeoIP module and anything else that can be used. I am a system engineer myself and kind of trying to have a super awesome setup, so need people with great depth of experience in this. Ready to start project right now!
