Your design requirements are very clear, I appreciate that. It's also clear that the issue with any rotary motion knob is it will shift the desk. I have 2 alternate designs in mind; both requiring non-rotary motions to release the piston. Both designs will require a modification of the collar (pos 2). One design would be very economical, the other would add some cost to the collar, but may be more attractive. I can sketch both and work out the general operation in a working day. Refining the design would take a second day. A third day would be devoted to basic drawings. You guys seem to have competent engineers to work out exact sizing, which in my experience is a moving target.
