Adjust Magento Theme Homepage For New Items; Hot Items Etc-NEED DONE NOW

I need my magento store setup to where the new items show up along with the featured items and also a few categories visible on the home page. I also need to insure that items show up there when a category is selected. Need done today as I leave for vacation in 18 hours.
