Textual Analysis Assignment

Write an essay analyzing a text which I have approved. Your purpose is to explain and evaluate how the text goes about making meaning. Though you may need to summarize the key arguments in the text you should not focus on creating a coherent interpretation of the text. Rather you should aim to take the text apart in order to understand its purpose and the way the author uses textual elements to achieve that purpose.

Your analysis may also lead to an evaluation of the text’s effectiveness, based on criteria drawn from the elements of the rhetorical situation. Is the text well organized? Does the writer provide sufficient evidence? Is the argument logically sound? You may focus on the logic of individual statements and how that logic either does or does not hold from statement to statement. You might also trace patterns of imagery or the writer’s use of loaded language to show how he or she is writing from a particular stance or slanting the meanings to a particular purpose, though a text I approve is unlikely to have loaded language..

Format: The paper should follow the style guidelines for student papers dictated by

the style manual you have indicated in your discipline memo. Any obvious format errors will result in a letter-grade penalty.

Length: 850-1500 words.

Audience: A college-level reader that is interested in how texts work.

Deadline: 5hours

Evaluation: I will read the final draft of your essay with the following questions in mind:

1) Does the writer produce a clear and logical analysis? Is the argument convincing and based on specific reasons? Is the essay clearly and skillfully organized? Does the text support the writer’s argument?

2) Is the essay well written grammatically? Are the sentences skillfully constructed? Is the diction varied and appropriate to the audience? Has the writer taken time to polish the paper for the reader?

3) Does the writer cite the text as evidence? Do citations follow appropriate style guidelines? Is the entire paper formatted correctly?
