Not quite older than dirt, I offer context for the things that grab at our attention today. From my junior high school journalism class and the school paper on, I have always enjoyed the challenge of piling one word on top of another until a coherent thought emerges. While pursuing an engineering and business career, I always found opportunities to implant a few of those words on some paper that was seen by others. Stops in between included military service spent in the post public information office sending out news releases and variously sports editing and editing the post newspaper. Abundant reading time feeds my interests in politics, religion, history, environment and the economy. My professional career included 40 years in the environmental industry. Some Reasons to Think about Water While Drinking Beer May of this year, in between freaking out about my first beer being two-tenths of a point below the specified gravity, and then freaking out about accidentally creating bottle bombs because I’d added way too much priming sugar to the bucket, I was starting to worry about water. I was pouring dozens of gallons of the stuff down the drain just to brew just a few cases of beer, which wasn’t doing my water bill or the environment any favors. Despite the fact that I had been drinking beer since, uh, "college," I never really thought about how much water it takes to make the stuff. In this article, Ian Hughes, Assistant Manager of Goose Island Brewery, voices his worries about the persisting water pollution issues in Chicago and reminds us that beer is 90% water. With water being such a vital component of this great malty beverage, beer makers have a pretty good reason to take precious care of their water supply (especially considering that beer is actually closer to 93% water; if you feel like geeking out with me, check the math at the end of this article). But the water in beer isn’t the only water I’m worried about, though it can at least help you stay hydrated.
