The marketing manager in the first situation employs reward power to influence Employee 1 to work beyond the requisite 40 hours a week, including weekends. He constantly reminds them of performance bonuses and ratings to encourage his subordinates to work harder. Employee 1 clearly becomes dependent upon the marketing manager’s reward scheme, as he plans his dream vacation on the bonus he could get.
In the second example, Employee 2 displays expert power as he is the only Certified Public Accountant in the company. He has used his power to negotiate a shorter work week as he is the only expert who can prepare the company’s financial statements. In a way, Employee 2 also uses coercive power in his negotiations with the account manager, as he uses his threat to leave the company or to possibly not join to get a shorter work week. We also see that the accounts manager displays dependency on the Certified Public Accountant as he is the only one who can prepare financial statements.
The marketing manager from the first example and the accounts manager both use legitimate power over their subordinates. The marketing manager sets up a system of bonuses and ratings and rewards, the account managers grants his accountant a four day week due to the legitimacy of their positions in the company.
