Over the past 30 years, a great deal of attention has been focused on research on flow around cylindrical structures, especially on flow around one or two cylinders. By virtue of its common occurrence in many forms and in different applications, cross-flow around a group of cylinders is a common phenomenon in engineering and is one of the classical problems of fluid dynamics. Heat exchangers, cooling systems etc. are some of the example equipment’s in which the cylindrical structures can be found. The most critical problems such as cross-flow induced vibration and noise leads to the reduction of life span of the equipment. Hence, it is imperative to understand the mechanism of flowinduced vibration and the associated fluid–structure interaction in order to improve the design of such equipment.
REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE AND CONCEPTS
I intend to review the available literature and concepts in the process of formulating and analyzing the selected system.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this project is firstly, to conduct a series of simulations (at least for two configurations from the mentioned source paper) for the unsteady flow around two cylinder configurations to verify the grid sensitivity and the turbulence modeling sensitivity (at least two grids and two turbulence models) by comparing qualitatively the flow structures to the experimental pictures and quantitatively the vortex shedding frequency computed to the experimental data reported in the source paper (Sumner, Price and Paidoussis, "Flow-pattern identification of two staggered circular cylinders in crossflow" Journal Fluid Mechanics (2000) vol 411 pp 263-303). Secondly, to use the best combination of grid and turbulence model and compare with the experiments.
