Overview

I have almost finished a 3rd person snowboarding game using a placeholder model as my snowboarder. The placeholder has all the animations and functionality that I want in the final game but it is an absolute minimum stick man.

I have included a video of the game in its current state so you can see the context.

I now want to replace my placeholder model with a more professional version.

Styling and backstory

The game is a head to head racing game the player always races against just one other opponent. The idea is that there is a professional snowboarding race scene spread all over the world. Each successive country requires the player to qualify in the previous country.

The graphic styling such as it is meant to capture a ski party feel and I have included front end footage in the include video.

Animations.

I need three animations which work at all LOD levels. An idle, a twist and a crouch.

The idle animation is a normal animation but the twist and crouch animations will not be played back in the normal way. Instead each frame of the game I will be procedurally posing the character at a specific instant in both animations simultaneously and at different points so I can pose the character in any combination of twist and crouch positions. I then use physics modelling functions to determine degrees of twist and crouch appropriate to what is going on. The physics engine will take care of things like resistance, momentum force etc...

The idle animation

This is a normal looped animation and is played when the snow border is stood still before and after a race so the player is relaxed upright with arms down.

The twist animation.

Arms out in a snowboarding pose. Where 0 degrees of twist is the border facing at right angles to the board. The Twist animation should cover plus and minus 120 degrees of turn giving a total turn of 240 degrees.

The crouch animation

Arms out in a snowboarding pose. The crouch animation covers the border from standing fully upright to crouching as low as it is absolutely physically possible for him to be.

Notice that these are not real animations they are just a way for me to pose the character so having bits lag behind or display other dynamic behaviour is not appropriate.

No slowing down of the animation at these start and end. The animations must be at at constant speed.

Whilst both animations can have bones in common care must be taken that all combinations of animations make ’sense’ i.e. look good and the crouch and twist must both be apparent to the viewer.

Technical Delivery

I need the character in 2 LODs one close up for the start and end scene one pulled back for high speed 'in race’ sections - see the included video. I will commission additional LODs separately if needed. The smaller LOD is as crucial as the big one (or more so) because the player MUST be able to discern the board position in order to steer.

All LODs must use the same single square texture.

Before starting the job we will have to agree specific poly counts.

I am working in Blender and Unity3d v4.3 the delivery will not be complete until the model is successfully imported into both packages.

I can carry out the export from blender into unity. I just need a version that I can import into blender in a format that exports correctly to unity. I am happy to try to help with delivery this aspect of the delivery process but I can not not take responsibility for it. In the end I need a version of the model and its animations in Blender formatted to allows successful export of both into unity.

The work needs to be largely your own. I have spent a lot of time looking at existing, off the shelf models, and I will recognise if the model relies too heavily on somebody else’s work. I understand that you may want to start from an existing base but the end result must be recognisably unique. I will need a full assignment of rights to the final work.
