MFC dockable dialog bar with scroll bars

Have need for MFC scroll bars to work in a CPaneDialog derived class regardless of it's current dock state. When using the WS_VSCROLL/WS_HSCROLL (built-in CWnd) styles the scroll bars only appear to work when the CPaneDialog is floating. When docked (and I assume re-parented) the non client area for the scroll bar appears but the scroll bar itself doesn't. Alternatively, directly adding CScrollBar objects to the dialog client area has it's own problem in that the scroll bars end up overlapping the normal dialog controls as the window size changes thereby corrupting the dialog. Searches on the internet so far have not provided any obvious solutions.
