1. The Mobile Application The ability to keep time in intervals is required in daily tasks, and yet the ability to do so is neither natively provided for by a smartphone, or is an arduous task if done manually. Interval timing can be useful for many personal purposes, such as for fitness and sports, cooking (and eating reminders), revising and educational timetabling, religious reasons, general meeting scheduling and personal life reminders, and perhaps many other scenarios. Perhaps you are revising on a 30 minute interval sequence, and intend to have 5 minute breaks, or are at the gym exercising on 2 minutes intervals and need a 20 second break each time, without the manual creation of such timings (or the careful eye on the stopwatch), there is no ability to accommodate. In terms of currently available technology, on offer by Apple and Android are native capabilities of a world clock (with support for different timezones), an alarm(s), a ‘bedtime’ management clock (that sets reminders to promote consistent, healthy sleeping), a stopwatch and a timer. Despite such an array of timing capabilities, there is no actual function to set an alarm based on interval timing. As such, the Interval Timer is a smartphone app that aims to offer for the needs of smartphone users. 2. Output Design to be constructed to enable mathematical calculations that respond back to the user’s input quickly and accurately. All associated mathematics needed to arrive at any given output should work dynamically as the user enters their input. 4. Details & Information The user is to be presented with an user interface that displays a time frame (take XY for explanatory purposes), and some associated adjustable settings. Via hard-coding of automatic calculations, the user needs to be able to set a custom finish time (Y) and have the ability to select a number of regularly spaced intervals (X1, X2, X3 and so on) that display graphically and register as points in time between XY. Between each interval (X1, X2, X3 and so on) the app must allocate a “pause period” (P), whereby this time length is defaulted at 10% of the time taken to reach between adjacent intervals. For example: (X), (P), (X1), (P), (X2), (P), (X3), (Y). To complete the app’s capabilities, the user must be able to override the default pause period (P) to a time length that they request. The pause period between each interval timing should be the same as each other (for example: X1 to X2 = X2 to X3). To summarise, the app with have a display frame that has adjustable settings for (XY), interval locations (X1, X2, X3 and so on) and pause periods (P). At quarterly points throughout the entire interval timeframe, there needs to be a motivational notification that is displayed to the user within the screen, but also via the smartphone’s vibrator and a simple “bing” notification sound. 5. Graphics and User Interface Provided is a series of design mock-ups. With a white background and a black logo header, the graphics are to be kept consistent as a user moves through the app. As per mock-up, the app should be of sufficient pixel-crisp quality to match the quality of it’s mathematical calculations. Likewise, the UI (User interface) should be created to be as similar and as easy / free flowing as the mockups, whereby any potential requirement to deviate beyond the graphic design due to technological reasons should be communicated with the design team. 7. Language The app is to be written in English English (and not American English).
