Ubuntu 16.06 - Setting Up User Permissions

We have a AWS EC2 instance running Ubuntu 16.06. We need to give access to the instance via SSH to a contractor from outside of the company. Because of security restrictions, their access needs to be restricted to protect our user's data.

1. A user has been created for them and they have been allocated into the www-data and contractor groups.

2. The user needs to be able to access (read/write/execute) their home directory, and /var/www/html/app/code/ (and sub-directories) and /var/www/html/app/design/ (and sub-directories) but no other parts of the site.

3. The website group (www-data) needs to retain ownership of the /var/www and sub-directories.

You will need to be familiar with Linux and system administration.

Access will not be provided directly to the site but a person at our end can screenshare and follow your instructions. Please indicate your familiarity with Ubuntu administration by replying with the command to elevate the current login to the root user.

I am very familiar with Ubuntu system, I've been working on linux as system engineer for years. My suggestion is to use filesystem ACL to implement permission control for the user.
