Qt is exactly the tool you need here: solid in the structure to give your product a long life, efficient in graphics rendering to provide a user-fiendly preview function, and perfectly prepared to work transparently on different platforms. We know FFmpeg very well (a member of our group has even contributed some code to it once upon a time) and we have adapted it often to produce specialized video players. We could thus build a custom version of it if required, to make it as light as possible for instance so that it supports all the features you need without any extra code. The key for the success of this transcoder will certainly be its ability to provide comfortable procedures to the users which make their work easier being powerful enough, so drag and drop and automation features should indeed be worked out carefully, and with a lot of testing in order to make it practically fit. Hello, I'm a computer scientist and math student. I'm quite experienced with ffmpeg. (Recently I converted a whole DVD-collection into mp4 files.) Maybe you should also consider to use avconv. It's a fork of ffmpeg but not quite as popular. I would use the MVC (mode-view-controller concept, see wikipedia) to implement the application and I would write it in python so it should be quite easy to use the application with Windows and Linux. Some adjustments must be done but it shouldn't be a problem. For the GUI I would suggest to use the Qt-framework. PyQt is one of the most popular python bindings. It isn't perfect but it's the best choice for GUI development with python and I had good experiences with it. For instance I used it for a software tool for 3d visualizations of meteorological data. If you choose me, I would need some further information about what the program should do and what not and some sample files will be helpful too. The result will be a solid working software (well tested) which you can use with Windows and Linux and you will get a documentation and installing instructions. Kind regards

I have FFMPEG building experience, I have use FFMPEG for live video recording and automatic license plate recognition in Windows and Linux environment. The project is live streaming from IP camera which is H.264 streaming. The stream video is display live with rectangle surrounding the capture license plate.
