Assume existence of two partitions of equal size. Partition types are
the same.
1) Full backup.
Write a user mode app that performs full copy of one partition into the other.
2) Drive image.
Write a kernel mode windows driver that intercepts all write calls to one of the partitions.
The driver should keep a partition map internally. The map is defined as follows:
Split the partition into large enough blocks (say 16 KB). For each block, keep a clean/dirty
status bit. Each write call toggles the dirty bit of the appropriate block.
3) Incremental backup
Based on map information generated in (2) perform incremental backup. Copy only blocks that
were marked as dirty by (2).
For the purpose of (1) and (3) assume that the partitions are currently inactive (no process is
reading or writing anything to both partitions.
4) Incremental Restore
Based on map information (2), restore only those blocks that were modified
The apps should work for FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS.
