The VE is needed to test a hypothesis that - Users interacting within a VE that contains several landmarks will perform better at navigational tasks than users who interact within a VE that has fewer landmarks. The users will be divided into four groups. Two groups will navigate the VE using maps with fewer landmarks, to accomplish the task. Two groups that will navigate the VE using maps that contain more landmarks that are placed along the most efficient route to the accomplish the task.

Using an engine like HalfLife, or similar four VEs are constructed ??" they should be urban environments and of the level of complexity of the map Italyfound in the HalfLife modification CounterStrike. The task is to find a captured hostage.

**project description:**

1) The creation of two pairs of maps. Each pair to have a map with some landmarks and another map the same but with more landmarks.

2) The modification of the game engine to make it suitable for measuring a player’s ability to navigate and perform tasks on that map. This should include a recording of the time taken for the task and navigation of the map and the distance covered by the player.

_Map 1

_An urban **_square_** shaped landscape containing both external and internal places - streets, buildings, squares, neighbourhoods, stairs and lifts.

_Map 2

_This should be Map 1 with additional landmarks. The landmarks should be placed along the optimal route to find the hostage and also placed at random at other locations in the VE.

additional landmarks :

Posters on a wall, for example, leading to a lift

A clock on a tower,

A newsvendor

Statue placed in different locations, lfor example in a square.

A post-box on a street

Advertisements, for example on a building

A row of street lights

_Map 3

_Same as map 1 but **_rectangular_** shaped landscape.

_Map 4

_This should be Map 3 with additional landmarks.

The landmarks should be placed the same as in map 2

The additional landmarks should be the same as in map 2.

## Deliverables

a) Four virtual environment maps as specified in project description.

b) A modification of the game engine to make it suitable for measuring a player’s ability to navigate and perform tasks on that map, i.e. a programme that allows identification and recording of the time taken for the task for each individual user and navigation of the map and the distance covered by the player. This information should be recorded in a log so that performance of all users can be compared.

1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done.

2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition, as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables):

a) For web sites or other server-side deliverables intended to only ever exist in one place in the Buyer's environment--Deliverables must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition in the Buyer's environment.

b) For all others including desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute: A software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request.

3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased. (No GPL, GNU, 3rd party components, etc. unless all copyright ramifications are explained AND AGREED TO by the buyer on the site per the coder's Seller Legal Agreement).
