I need a small app that can parse Word files. Students at my university answer multiple choice questions during their exam in Word files. A single Word file then looks like this: PLEASE SEE THE ENCLOSED PDF FOR THIS The only lines that start with “>?? and end with “<?? are the ones in the explanation in blue and the ones with the answers. I only need the answers. The maximum number of questions is 100, but it might be less (it usually is). On a regular exam I have about 200 of these kinds of Word-files. I want an app that can parse Word-files, about 200 of them, and creates a comma-separated ascii-file with the following format: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Name, Id, Q1, Q2, Q3, … , Q100 John Doe, 123456, A, B, A, D, C, … , A Jane Smith, 123321, A, C, A, D, D, … , B … - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTE: This can be done by using macros from within Word. In fact, I have a macro that does this from within Word. This is not what I want. Word then has to open 200 files and parse them. Because the Word files are relatively big (there is more in them, including pictures, screenshots, tables, etc than just the answers to the multiple choice questions), this is not an option. Word does not deal very well with opening and closing many large files. Although you can assume that Word is on the pc on which the app is used (not sure if that is of any use), I want the app to do its work without having to open Word itself (opening Word so often with sometimes big files is precisely what causes trouble). If that is not possible but have some other workaround, please let me know how you intend to deal with the issue.
