code fix - codeigniter ajax call from a wordpress site

Small code fix.
I have a codeigniter controller that echos data correctly when called directly.
A wordpress template that makes an ajax call to a local file on the same server works correctly and gets data returned. When the wordpress ajax url is changed to the codeigniter url it is being called correctly but no data is being returned.
CSRF is disabled.
What is required is for someone who is knowledgeable with Codeigniter and Ajax to make the call from the wordpress template file to the codeigniter controller work. The CI controller is on another server to the ajax calling file.
NO Coding with WP is required as the js code is all contained in a seperate JS file.
Summary:
Ajax call is working with a php file on the same server
Codeigniter controller called directly is returning/echoing data correctly
Need to have ajax call to codeigniter to work.
