Are you open to using websockets. If so I have a proposal (as well as some demo code) in Yesod/Haskell and Haxe front-end with json as the communication protocol. The demo code in one of my github repo supports public instant messages, private messages, group messages etc. I would certainly like to present this architecture to you. It is fun to do it this way.
