A Francis hydro turbine was in operation for many years. Now the Runner blades are found to be worn out. Our objective is to first find out the efficiency of the turbine with the worn out blades and then modify the blade geometry so that the efficiency of turbine increases. This project involves CFD modelling and analysis of Francis turbine with the worn out blades and calculation of turbine efficiency. Then in next step the runner blade profile needs to be modified so that the efficiency of turbine increases keeping in mind that cavitation and surge is also minimised.

I'd suggest clean project. It will be done with freeware CFD OpenFOAM and optimisation software DAKOTA. I have certain experience.

My name is Akshay Andhare, I'm a mechanical engineering student from IIT-P. Dear Sir I am an Assistant Professor working in Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Park college of engineering and technology, Coimbatore, India. I am currently working for Park Research Centre involving hydro machine design projects which are very useful in remote areas to generate electricity. Project Experience Design of Francis Turbine Runner I have worked in designing a Francis turbine runner which produces 110 kW at 54 m head. I have designed runner blade using BLADEGEN and analyzed using FLUENT for the flow picture inside the runner blades. The simulation was done for the whole Francis turbine starting right at the spiral casing to the draft tube. The overall machine was analyzed to operate safely without cavitation since it is a small machine where you have more possibility for cavitation, particularly when there is loss in head upstream to the runner. Design and Analysis of Kaplan Turbine I have worked in designing and analyzing a Kaplan type axial hydro turbine which produces 1 kW for a head of 2 m. In this case the complete machine was modeled using CATIA and the flow analysis was done using FLUENT. This type of machines can be used to reduce the power scarcity near river beds where you have more flow rate but considerably small head. First of all i am experienced in CFD & also working on steam turbine from past 15 months. Analysis with Ansys & NX nastran. Good Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis. Good in Modeling. Working Plan :- 1. Input Gathering. 2. Study on Francis Hydro Turbine input gathered. 3. CFD Model the Francis Hydro Turbine according to Input parameter values. 4. Analysis(Thermal & Structural analysis) of the Francis Hydro Turbine according to the boundary conditions & load applied. 5. Calculate the results theoretically with formulae. 6. Now work on increasing the efficiency of the blade by research & development in CFD Modeling structural. 7. Implementing the best results through analysis of modified CFD model of Francis Hydro Turbine blade profile. Testing will be done on all test cases prepared for the modified Francis Hydro Turbine.

Well, this project requires quite a lot of work and experience. The project budget is very low for this project. Anyways, I have access to tools such as Blade Editor in which you can introduce your blade shape to the software and create parameters for Beta angles, etc. So, this process opens the gate for the optimization step. By specifying targets (e.g. maximize mfr) and specifying intervals to your parameters, software can carry out many possible combinations and shows you possible best combinations. Just to let you know; in this study if you pick me, I'll do the work by using RANS methods for turbulence, MRF for rotating blades and tetra&prism mesh for the grid. Good day!

Hi Addy, I would like to take up this project. Please let us know more details of your requirements. We would be modelling the blade geometry using solidworks and CFD analysis will be done using OpenFOAM software. Do we need to create geometry of old blades and do analysis or you already have goemtry model for them for which analysis needs to be made.
