Johnny Cash: The Man in Black
Johnny Cash was one of the most influential singer-songwriters of all times. Born February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash was one of seven children in a devout Baptist family. His family sang while picking cotton. His greatest influence was gospel radio and later he released an album My Mother's Hymn Book. When he was twelve, his brother Jack was mutilated by a head saw while their father was away. His entire life, Johnny felt responsible for Jack's death and looked forward to meeting his brother in Heaven.
Though he considered himself a sinner, Cash believed in God and allowed his creator to save him at times when he was his darkest.
Cash battled with alcohol and drug addiction. In 1968 when he felt all was lost in his life, he went to Nickajack cave in Marion, Tennessee with the intention of taking his life. It was there he felt God's presence and by grace, and with June Carter's help, he cleaned himself up. They were married and in 1997, Carter and Cash won a Grammy Award for their duet Jackson.
Cash was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, and the Gospel Singer's Hall of Fame, He was the youngest living person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He sold more than fifty million albums and recorded more than fifteen hundred songs, fourteen of them being # 1 Hits.
Johnny Cash was a devout Christian who had a personal relationship with God. His faith helped him overcome his demons. Cash found redemption on September 12, 2003 less than three months after his wife June died. He died of complications with diabetes but many believed he died of a broken heart and is now in heaven with June, and his brother Jack.
Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Sparks was born December 31, 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, a scientist, and his mother, an optometrist assistant raised a son who would shine light on millions of people across the world with his inspirational stories that carry a message of light and joy.
Nicholas was the middle child with an older brother Michael and a younger sister Danielle. "Dana" died at the age of thirty-three of a brain tumor. Her story became the inspiration for his novel A Walk to Remember.
The Sparks family is devout Roman Catholic, a tradition Nicholas and his family continues, their faith being the driving force in their lives.
After several occupational failures including law school, real estate, and telemarketing, Nicholas took a job in Washington, D.C. as a pharmaceutical representative. It was during this time he wrote The Notebook based on his wife's grandparents who were together more the sixty years. The book recants the love affair of Noah and Allie. Allie has Alzheimer's disease, and the novel portrays not only the couples' devotion to one another, but also their faith in one another.
In 1996, Time Warner Book Group released the novel. It hit the New York Times Bestseller List in its first week, holding its status for ore a year. This success sparked a lucrative career for Nicholas. The novel was adapted to screenplay with eight more novels that also made the big screen. He has written over seventeen novels in his career.
Currently, Sparks lives New Bern, North Carolina with his wife, Cathy and their five children. He has set up the MFA program for creative writing at the university of Notre Dame with contributions to fellowships, internship sand scholarships that encourage young writers.
He and his wife also funded The Epiphany School of Global Studies in New Bern, NC. The Epiphany School is a K-12 prep school with Catholic values that encourages children to travel. The school prepares them to further their education through college and beyond with the idea that learning is a lifetime endeavor.
