We have experience working with RFID scanners. We have made several games and door locks that require several cards to operate(for example storing a unique id for a master card and then using it to add/remove other cards to an allowed list on the EEPROM memory for a door lock). We haven't used exactly this reader till now but I don't see this being any problem. We are a team of 2(1 experienced c/c++ programmer and 1 experienced hardware guru). Also we have the Mega board so no need in sending that we will just need the reader.
