Converting an 8 level brightness image to a stereolithography file is almost trivial and definitely not worth $5000. For your budget I can do something much better. You seek a way to allow blind people to appreciate photographs though a sense of touch. A grayscale photo typically supplies 256 levels of brightness, but what matters more than the absolute brightness is the brightness relative to nearby areas. I propose to filter the image so that a great sense of depth can be conveyed without needing to build a deep model. Sculptors have done this for thousands of years, it is called bas-relief, and it is used to ornament building in numerous cultures. Google 'bas-relief' to see examples of what I mean. A few years ago, at the San Diego SIGGRAPH meeting, Tim Weyrich presented a paper on using computer techniques to generate bas-reliefs. (ACM Transactions on Graphics (Proc. SIGGRAPH 2007), 26, 3 (Jul. 2007), 32). I propose to use some of Tim's techniques to generate relatively shallow models that will convey a complex scene to a blind person. Since most photos do not have lighting that allows interpretation of shading to reconstruct even approximately the original scene, I would be encoding just the relative brightness content variations of the image. Most human perception works better with relative rather than absolute sensations. I have spent most of my professional life dealing with 3D graphics and 3D file formats. Most recently I developed a program that, among other things, converted data from a laser scanner to an STL file, for use by orthodontists, so I am thoroughly familiar with STL and other 3D file formats. If you select my bid, I will work with you to provide the best possible solution to allow blind people to enjoy photos.

i have send you the result of the conversion in clarification board. (due to size limitation of the attachment the resolution of the example is pretty poor. normally it would be much better: appr. factor 8). the height is scalable. the convexity can be also changed without any problem p.s. The price for this project should be less then 5000. best regards
