When it comes to studying ideology, there is no better genre than musicals. Musicals encapsulate our hopes and dreams, and they parade them on display in an entertaining fashion. The genre itself is rather self-explanatory. Musicals are exactly what they sound like: musical vignettes interwoven with a convincing narrative. The combination results in a very emotionally-charged narrative, and overall, it is a very effective and strong way to communicate themes and ideologies. One of the foremost musicals that was effective in communicating emotion as well as ideologies was the musical Meet Me In St. Louis.
Meet Me In St. Louis as a movie isn’t anything spectacular. It features a rather bland plot, typical musical renditions, and overall, there is nothing outstanding about its narratorial construction. While these are all true observations of the movie, it doesn’t make it any less effective at examining several ideologies, namely the ideologies of hopes and dreams. The movie itself is a reflection of many western ideals, again, primarily the ideals of hopes and dreams. The two prominent characters, Tootie and Esther, are both young attractive women in the prime of their life. Like most women in real life, the desire to find true love is what defines their importance significance within society.
